Having considered the hardware components like CPU, RAM, and GPU that power local Large Language Models, the next piece of the puzzle is the operating system (OS) running on that hardware. The software tools you'll use to download, manage, and interact with LLMs need to be compatible with your OS. Fortunately, the community developing these tools generally aims for broad compatibility across the most common desktop operating systems.

Most popular tools designed for running LLMs locally offer support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. However, the setup process and sometimes performance characteristics can differ slightly between them. Let's look at what to expect for each major platform.

Windows

Windows is a widely used operating system, and developers of local LLM tools often provide dedicated installers (.exe or .msi files) to simplify setup.

• Compatibility: Tools like Ollama and LM Studio, which we will discuss later, have excellent support for modern versions of Windows (Windows 10 and 11).
• GPU Support: If you have a compatible NVIDIA GPU, Windows generally offers straightforward driver installation through NVIDIA's official tools (like GeForce Experience), which is necessary for GPU acceleration. AMD GPU support for LLM acceleration is less common across all tools but is improving.
• Command Line: While some tools offer graphical interfaces, others rely on the command line. Windows has the Command Prompt and PowerShell, and advanced users might use the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). For beginners, tools with installers usually handle the necessary configurations.

macOS

macOS, especially with the advent of Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3 chips), has become a capable platform for running LLMs locally.

• Compatibility: Tools frequently offer native macOS applications (.dmg files or installable packages). Ollama and LM Studio, for instance, run very well on macOS.
• Hardware Integration: Apple's unified memory architecture on M-series chips can be particularly beneficial for LLMs, allowing the CPU and GPU to share memory efficiently. This often leads to good performance even without a discrete NVIDIA GPU.
• Command Line: The Terminal application in macOS provides a Unix-like environment, which is standard for many development tasks, including interacting with command-line LLM tools.

Linux

Linux is a popular choice in the machine learning and development communities due to its open-source nature and flexibility.

• Compatibility: Most LLM tools offer good support for Linux. Installation might involve downloading executable files, using package managers (like apt for Debian/Ubuntu or yum/dnf for Fedora), or compiling from source for more advanced tools like llama.cpp.
• GPU Support: Setting up GPU drivers (especially NVIDIA CUDA) on Linux can sometimes require more manual steps compared to Windows or macOS, depending on your distribution and hardware. AMD ROCm drivers are also an option for supported AMD GPUs.
• Distributions: While many distributions work, documentation and pre-compiled binaries often target popular ones like Ubuntu. However, the underlying tools are generally portable across different Linux systems.
